Contact
lenses have never been so popular and are now more convenient than ever. This
section explains what's available.
Not long ago contact lenses were only worn by a select few and for them it was often an every day ordeal! But now almost all people requiring corrective lenses have the option of wearing contact lenses as an alternative to spectacles.
What contact lenses should I wear?
You have the choice of daily disposables or extended wear lenses with daily disposables becoming increasingly popular. We will discuss your requirements (lifestyle and budgetary) and then make our recommendation.
Daily disposable contact lenses
In recent years the biggest innovation by far has been the introduction of daily disposable contact lenses which, as the term suggests, are renewed daily. Daily disposable lenses also give you more freedom to pick and choose which days you wear contact lenses and which days you wear spectacles. As with all contact lenses, the appropriate wearing time as recommended by your optometrist or contact lens optician must always be adhered to as over wearing of lenses can result in injury to the eye.
Soft lenses
Soft (or Hydrophilic) lenses have a high water content and so allow oxygen to be transmitted to the cornea, increasing wearing time and making the lens more comfortable. As these lenses are re-worn (unlike daily disposable lenses) they must be cleaned and disinfected daily.
Hard lenses
Hard or rigid lenses are made of a hard, relatively inflexible, plastics material which does not allow oxygen to be transmitted. This leads to comparatively short wearing periods. As these lenses are re-worn they must be cleaned and disinfected daily.
Gas permeable lenses
Gas Permeable lenses are still made of a rigid material but their structure allows oxygen to pass through and, therefore, they are more comfortable than standard hard lenses. As these lenses are re-worn they must be cleaned and disinfected daily.
